چکیده

We propose a new method to reduce the effects of non-linearities such as beam hardening in Computed Tomography (CT) images. Due to the polychromatic characteristics of X-ray sources the ratio of attenuated and incoming intensity is not exactly exponential with the material thickness. Within CT images this leads to artifacts like cupping, streaks and blurring. Especially in multi-material objects with highly different attenuation characteristics these effects are even more complex. The method described in this paper allows the correction of beam hardening artifacts in multimaterial objects. The presented approach does not require any estimate or knowledge of the incident X-ray spectrum nor of material characteristics like mass density or absorption coefficients. The method uses the original projection images and works without any reference measurements. Several specimens of miscellaneous material combinations were measured with CT. Afterwards, the artifact correction was applied to show the efficiency of the proposed method.

Multi-Material Beam Hardening Correction(MMBHC) in Computed Tomography

In computed tomography (CT), the nonlinear attenuation characteristics of polychromatic X-rays cause beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. State-of-theart methods to correct the beam hardening effect are mostly single material precorrections (e.g. water-precorrection), which are far less efficient when more than one material is present in the field of measurement. The use of tho...

Artifact reduction techniques in Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging modality

Introduction: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was introduced and became more common based on its low cost, fast image procedure rate and low radiation dose compared to CT. This imaging modality improved diagnostic and treatment-planning procedures by providing three-dimensional information with greatly reduced level of radiation dose compared to 2D dental imaging modalitie...

Spectrum Binning Approach for Multi-Material Beam Hardening Correction (MMBHC) in CT

In CT, the nonlinear attenuation characteristics of polychromatic X-rays cause beam hardening artifacts in the reconstructed images. When datasets contain multiple materials in the field of scan, the performance of state-of-the-art beam hardening correction approaches is limited by high computational load and reduced correction efficiency. An image based multi-material beam hardening correction...

Beam hardening correction and its influence on the measurement accuracy and repeatability for CT dimensional metrology applications

The beam hardening effect is one of the major artifacts of X-ray computed tomography. It not only complicates medical inspection and material analysis, but also influences the accuracy and repeatability of dimensional measurements. Therefore, many efforts have been devoted to develop beam hardening correction methods since the early 1970s. In practice, the combination of hardware filters (pre-f...
